Growing Beanstalks

Growing plants is always a great activity to try with children at home as it is a great way to introduce them to the idea of looking after something. And also a great way to start understanding what things need to live and grow. In our August Gardening Activity box we included some bean seeds for small world play however these can also be reused to grow your very own beanstalk!

Set Up

For this I used the bean seeds from our August Activity Box and then added a jar and initially apart from some water that is it. Once the beans have been soaked over night you will also need some cotton wool to add to the jar.

As soon as my two had read the page from the Sunflower, Shoots and Muddy Boots book apart planting beans and they realised that they had bean seeds as part of their activity box, they had been desperate to grow them. So they were very excited when we finally got round to it. The first step was to plop the beans into a jar and add water, leaving them to soak overnight. We followed the books instructions which made it a great reading activity.

Once they had soaked overnight the girls were keen to check on them. We looked for any changes then poured out the water added cotton wool and sprayed the cotton wool until it was wet. They were keen to make sure that their beans were snug but not covered too much. It has been so much fun to keep checking on them and watching the changes happen. This is such a simple gardening activity but such a great one to get your little ones hooked.
