Maths at Spring Time

Thanks to Thomas the Tank Engine my son is able to recognise some numbers and can rote count well. So now it is time to teach him to count and one of the first stages of this is understanding 1:1 correspondence. This activity teaches this skill in an engaging and playful way.

Set Up

For this activity I used the ladybirds, the bees and the wood slice stampers from our April activity box. The flowers and herbs were from our garden that we had picked these in the morning.

Our focus was counting to three but if you are focusing on a bigger or smaller number just put out the corresponding amount of resources.

So to begin with I put out one flower and I asked my son to put one bee on the flower. I then showed him the number 1. We repeated this for the numbers 1, 2 and 3 with me modelling how to count the objects.

My son really enjoyed the activity and we took it in turns to count out the bees / ladybirds and fly them around the room before they landed on the flowers or wood slices.

Beautiful little activity to teach 1;1 correspondence and counting to any toddler, preschooler or child.
