Coin Toss Maths Game

This is a simple and fun maths game that can easily be adapted to suit a range of ages and abilities. To make it easier just use one coin and it could be a game of number recognition where they simply have to say the number they land on; or decide who lands on the higher number. To make it more challenging, the numbers could be increased, they could have more coins to throw and add together, or they might have to take the smaller number away to try and make a given number. The possibilities are endless.

Set Up

I wrote numbers from 1 - 5 on post it notes and then I stuck them on our tuff tray. However the post its could have been stuck directly onto a hard floor, or a small children’s table. or if playing outside could have been written with chalk on a patio. I added a few coins and it was ready.

The girls were keen to start throwing the coins before knowing the rules. The rules I had initially planned were to throw two coins, add them together and see who can make 6 first. However it quickly changed to who could score the highest as this is what the girls wanted to do.

The girls enjoyed playing this maths game and it soon got competitive, with subtle movement of the coins going on! This was a great, fun maths game that all of us could get involved in and enjoy.
