Colourful Eggs
This colour sorting toddler activity is quick to set up and teaches colour recognition and sorting. By presenting this activity with Easter Eggs from the previous year’s Easter Egg hunt and loose parts from our craft box, my 2 year old was very intrigued by this game. This colour sorting activity could be easily differentiated for older or younger children.
Set Up
For this colour sorting toddler activity, I simply chose three coloured bowls that we had in our kitchen cupboard and then hunted in our arts and crafts box for any loose parts that were the same colour. This included pom poms, buttons, the tops of fruit pouches. I then put a collection of the objects inside an egg and placed the filled eggs in our bread basket.
It was my toddler’s idea to put the empty egg shells into an old egg box that was destined for the recycling.
When my 2 year old saw this activity he was immediately drawn to it: “what’s inside the egg?” I did worry that he would be disappointed that there wasn’t any edible treats inside the eggs but he wasn’t fussed. I modelled that we needed to sort them into their respective colours and he was off.
Once my toddler knew how to complete this colour sorting activity he was able to do this independently, meaning I could make dinner in peace. Every time he had completed the sorting activity he would just ask me to help me put the loose parts back into the eggs.
It was such a great activity, so simple to set up and he was able to do this by himself that we have done this activity a couple more times but with different colours.
