The Colour Monster Puppet Show
A puppet show is a very simple literacy activity to try at home. It is a fantastic way to support your child’s speaking and listening development. And it is lots of fun too! Using a book as a starting point is a great way to start as your children will already be familiar with the story and potentially lots of the language too.
Set Up
For this activity we used the wool colour monsters that we had already made from our Colour Monster activity box. I then used an upturned basket as our stage but a cardboard box or the back of a sofa works well too.
First we reread the story focussing on the pages about the blue and yellow colour monster. Afterwards we talked about what we knew about the blue and yellow monster and then their monsters came to life. They both took on the role of one of the monsters and the yellow monster tried to cheer up the sad blue monster; the monsters held hands and they played.
This was an activity which after a while I could leave them to it and they played happily with their monsters. They narrated their play themselves and mummy was invited to come watch their show. A puppet show really is a great way to bring a story to life and to develop their speaking and listening. Of course the puppet show could easily be reversed with the parent taking on the role of puppet master.
