High Frequency Word Finger Print
Learning high frequency words can be ridiculously mundane so finding enjoyable ways of doing it is helpful. Lots of these words cannot be sounded out using out using phonics so it is important that children can recognise the order of the letters that make up these words. Physically creating the letters that make up these words helps the process of remembering these words. Using the ink stamper from our Changing Trees Activity Box makes this a simple but fun activity to try at home.
Set Up
I chose high frequency words that are not able to be read using phonics and are ones that I knew M still found tricky. I used the ink stamper from our Changing Trees Activity Box and then wrote the words on strips of card using a pencil.
When M saw me writing out the words she was intrigued and started attempting to read them. So we read them together and I explained that I wanted her to create her own word cards that we could then stick up around the house to practice them. She set off making them and I was impressed with the way she considered colours and pattern too.
This high frequency word activity idea was not only fun for M but so easy to set up and kept her busy and learning at home. This activity can also be easily adapted for learning initial sounds and letter shapes. It can also be used to learn how to spell their own names too. M is so proud of her final word cards and is looking forward to using them as part of her learning at home.
