Personalised Name Puzzle
This is such an easy name recognition activity for toddlers and older children that you can do at home. It will help toddlers and children to recognise their own name. It also great fun and can be used to keep your little ones busy when you need 5 minutes.
Set Up
This activity is easy to set up. You just use some card. I like using coloured card like this one. Card stops it being completely scrunched up by little hands and means you can use the resource again! You can also go the extra mile and laminate it, to make it last longer, but I didn’t have the time. Write down your child’s name twice. Cut the name to separate them. Then cut one of the names into the individual letters.
This was a name recognition activity I have done with M lots; so she knew as soon as she saw it that she would need to rearrange the pieces. However we had not done the activity with anyone else’s name; so it was a bit of a surprise for her. F enjoyed moving the pieces around and she has already learnt that writing on paper has meaning. So, she would pick up pieces and say “a, a, a.”
So M completed both names quite easily. I think the next time we do this simple activity at home. I will give her the pieces cut up for her name but not give the example to use to help her. This will be slightly more challenging and help with name recognition. This is an easy name recognition activity to try at home with toddlers and children. It also works really well as an activity for the spelling of high frequency words with older children at home or at school.
