Christmas Salt Dough Decorations
This is such a lovely Christmas craft to try with toddlers, pre-schoolers and older children too. The Christmas decorations they create can be kept for years to come. Christmas is such a great time to get crafty together and helps get you all in the festive spirit or can be the perfect way to spend time in the days after Christmas day.
Set Up
For this activity I used the cinnamon salt dough dry ingredients that are included in our December activity box. You could of course make your own. We also used the cookie cutters from our activity box and then just added some water, bowls and spoons for mixing and a couple of old wooden chopsticks (pencils would work just as well)
My two were very keen to get started with this activity so much so I didn’t have time to set up as such they just helped me get all the different bits together. The smell from the salt dough was incredible and filled our home with a very festive smell. The girls each added their own water to the salt dough. Adding just enough for it to become a firm and smooth dough once kneaded together. After that I really didn’t need to give them any more instructions they just set about making their decorations.
They used their chop sticks to not only add a hole for the ribbon to be threaded through once they were dry. But also to decorate and add detail to their decorations. We then placed them on some baking paper and put them in the oven on the lowest temperature for roughly 3 -4 hours. They could have also been air dried but this would take much longer and mine definitely didn’t have the patience for that! This was such a lovely festive activity to do together and their decorations look great hanging on the tree!
