Building Site
Which small person, especially if they love diggers and dirt, would not love their very own construction site to play with at home. This is a great activity to spark your child’s imagination and develop their language. Use what have you have available at home, the possibilities are endless.
Set Up
So this is very much the case of what you have at home. I made the soil and sand from cheap ground coffee (which I keep in the cupboard) and semolina flour. But you could also use rice crispies, uncooked rice, lentils or even real soil and sand! Add any small figures, cars, diggers, sticks (I use wood slices like these for lots of activities) or pebbles you can find and it is ready to go. I used these pull back diggers which i had put in an advent calendar for M one year.
As soon as the girls saw the activity there was no need for an explanation they got stuck straight in. It all started off fairly orderly with them both sticking to their own sides and happy with the people and vehicles they had commandeered. Walls were built, soil was moved and instructions were given out.
After playing for a while the ‘soil’ and ‘sand’ it became more and more mixed. They were swapping ‘soil’ and ‘sand’ from each other’s sides and it was great to see them playing so nicely together. The girls were desperate to continue playing with it until dinner time. As we had done the activity outside there was hardly any cleaning up to do. I just dusted off the toys and tipped the soil mixture into a zip lock bag ready to play with again.
