The Snowman
This messy play Christmas activity is based on the classic story The Snowman by Raymond Briggs. This book is great because there is no text toddlers and children can read the story by describing what they can see in each picture.
This activity would be a great for older babies, toddlers and children. Messy play is great for children’s development, read more here, and this activity will work on many skills as well as get everyone in the Christmas spirit.
Set Up
This messy play Christmas activity was really quick to set up. The snow was desiccated coconut, the smile was made out of black pom poms, the buttons are glass vase pebbles and the eyes were old buttons I had in my sewing box.
My 2 year old immediately recognised this as the snowman and he first of all rearranged the nose, eyes, scarf and buttons. He then asked to read the story and we both took turns to describe what was happening in each picture.
We spent time exploring the ‘snow’ and building little snowmen. My toddler then decided to play hide and seek with the book. Letting your child interact with the resource how they see fit encourages their imagination, curiosity and thinking skills.
I swept up the ‘snow’ at the end of the day so we could create other snow scenes in the lead up to Christmas.
