Seaside Wave
Our seaside small worlds from our Seaside Activity Box have been such a hit with our little ones that adding water was the next natural step to add another sensory element to the small world play. Which child doesn’t like being able to play with water! The book which inspired this monthly activity box, Clem and Crab by Fiona Lumbers talks of “the crashing waves” I wanted to give the girls an opportunity to experience and then use this language themselves.
Set Up
For this sensory seaside set up I took all the small world items from our Seaside Activity Box and placed them into a waterproof container. For M used a small ceramic dish and for F a tupperware box. I also got a jug of water ready to fill their rock pools with.
The girls were both so excited to add water to their rock pools. They both wanted to feel the waves rolling into their rock pools as I poured the water. So they placed their hands into the containers as I poured. This was repeated several times!
Once their rock pools were filled with water it was time to create some waves. I showed them how to move their containers from side to side to move the water. As they copied obviously the waves got rougher and they were thrilled when the waves crashed onto the sides of their containers and sploshed over the edge. Of course they needed more water poured in! Once they had played creating waves lots they then both happily played with their rock pools making up their own small world narratives. The language that both were using was so impressive and a joy to listen in to! Their rock pools have been such a huge hit and they both will keep returning to them to continue their small world play.
