Growing Sunflowers
This is a simple gardening activity idea that is easy to try with kids at home. This is one of our activities from our Colour Monster Activity box and is inspired by the wonderful book The Colour Monster by Anna Llenas. In the story yellow is the colour of happiness and my two have become slightly obsessed with yellow flowers since reading this book so this is the perfect activity for them.
Set Up
So for this I used the sunflower seeds, compost pellet and tissue paper from our monthly activity box. I also added some water and a toilet roll and we were ready.
My two were very very keen to get started with this activity! I wanted them to do this as independently as possible so I simply read each instruction one at a time and then let them get on with it. They worked so incredibly well together on this gardening activity.
It wasn’t all smooth sailing and although the water was supposed to be added a little bit at a time. My two got a bit too enthusiastic with the water pouring and it ended up running straight through the bottom of the toilet roll! No big deal, we were outside and only water. They really enjoyed it and are already very much in love with their potential sunflowers; checking on them daily and watering them. This gardening activity also gave us an opportunity to talk about what plants need in order to grow.
