Faces
This activity is inspired by the book ‘Leaf’ by Sandra Dieckmann and is a simple and powerful multi-sensory way to teach children to recognise their own and other people’s emotions.
Set Up
For this activity I used the salt, wooden Polar Bear and blue paper from our October ‘Polar Bear’ Activity box, I added the paint brush from our June ‘At the Seaside’ activity box and a mirror.
We started by rereading ‘Leaf’ by Sandra Dieckmann, paying particular attention to how the Polar Bear looked throughout the story. Together we discussed how the Polar Bear was feeling throughout the story and how could we tell he felt like that.
We then looked at ourselves in the mirror I had put on the table to see how our faces may look differently when we feel a different emotion.
We then took it turns to draw different emotions on our salt faces. This was such a simple activity and my son learnt that people will wear different expressions dependent on the emotion they are currently experiencing.
