Coconut and Rice Crispies
This a simple and fun sensory activity that can be done with older babies and toddlers at home. Messy play is great for babies and toddlers development. This activity came about as when F sees M eating rice crispies for breakfast she wants some too. So I put some dry ones in a bowl for her to taste. I realised that she missing out on the fun part of rice crispies and a sensory experience. The snap, crackle and pop! As both M and F are dairy free to varying extents I wanted to use a dairy free alternative to milk. I thought the smell of the coconut would be another great sensory experience for them.
Set Up
All I used for this was a big flat oven try like this one. Then I poured coconut milk, diluted with some water into the tray and put rice crispies into a pot. Add any pots and utensils that you think your little one will enjoy using. If you are doing this with a baby it would be best to set it up on the floor or high chair. If you are doing the activity inside, I would recommend putting a shower curtain on the floor to contain the mess.
The girls started off very tamely using their spoons to sprinkle and scatter the rice crispies. I stopped the girls for a moment so that we could listen to the rice crispies pop and crackle. If I was doing this with a baby, I would pour some of the rice crispies into the tray for them to start off with. And then let them get stuck in.
Without warning F tipped the entire contents of her cup of rice crispies into the tray. M, of course, followed suit. They spent quite some time mixing and scooping the mixture back into the cups. They both then took it upon themselves to start serving Mummy and Daddy their concoctions. The girls then created their own restaurant; although with limited menu choices. They had so much fun with this activity. A great easy sensory activity to try at home, that is suitable for older babies and toddlers alike.
