Bugs
Here are our top tips for completing the fun and minibeast-themed activities from our Bug box. These bug-themed activities are inspired by the brilliant picture book The Bug Collector.
Planting oregano
The oregano seeds are very small, so please be careful when taking them out of the envelope.
You can always tip the seeds straight out of the envelope onto the peat-free compost and adjust them with a pencil / stick or your finger.
Bug hotel
Please be mindful that the edges of the can or bottle may be sharp.
The wood wool which we send to keep everything safe is a wonderful resource to pack inside your bug hotel.
If you don’t want to hang your bug hotel up, you can place it on some bricks so it is raised off the ground.
Bug hunt
Try and visit different natural areas to see if you can find different kinds of bugs.
Bug drawings
This was my son’s favourite activity from this box.
He used the book as inspiration for what he drew.
Bee watering hole
Bees need water, especially in this hot weather.
Add pebbles, shells, sticks and just enough water that the pebbles and shells are not submerged.
Keep your bee watering hole in a shady spot near some flowers.
Butterfly feeder
Thread overripe fruit through a stick and hand up outside.
Oranges, bananas, pears and melon would all work well.
Inside bug hunt
If it is too hot outside, bring the bug hunt inside.
Place the bug hunt sheet under a large glass dish.
Add some brown food colouring to some water and pour this into your dish. Add a clear drinking glass and look through the glass to find the bugs.
