Bugs

Here are our top tips for completing the fun and minibeast-themed activities from our Bug box. These bug-themed activities are inspired by the brilliant picture book The Bug Collector.

Kids Subscription Box Gardening

Planting oregano

  • The oregano seeds are very small, so please be careful when taking them out of the envelope.

  • You can always tip the seeds straight out of the envelope onto the peat-free compost and adjust them with a pencil / stick or your finger.

Bug hotel

  • Please be mindful that the edges of the can or bottle may be sharp.

  • The wood wool which we send to keep everything safe is a wonderful resource to pack inside your bug hotel.

  • If you don’t want to hang your bug hotel up, you can place it on some bricks so it is raised off the ground.

Bug hunt

  • Try and visit different natural areas to see if you can find different kinds of bugs.

Bug drawings

  • This was my son’s favourite activity from this box.

  • He used the book as inspiration for what he drew.

Bee watering hole

  • Bees need water, especially in this hot weather.

  • Add pebbles, shells, sticks and just enough water that the pebbles and shells are not submerged.

  • Keep your bee watering hole in a shady spot near some flowers.

Butterfly feeder

  • Thread overripe fruit through a stick and hand up outside.

  • Oranges, bananas, pears and melon would all work well.

Inside bug hunt

  • If it is too hot outside, bring the bug hunt inside.

  • Place the bug hunt sheet under a large glass dish.

  • Add some brown food colouring to some water and pour this into your dish. Add a clear drinking glass and look through the glass to find the bugs.
