Splatting
Inspired by the story ‘The Snowy Day’ by Ezra Jack Keats this is a fun multi-sensory activity to teach counting, number recognition, one more and one less and addition and subtraction.
set up
For this activity I used the moon dough from our January Snowy Day activity box, an egg cup, some wooden numbers and a board to build our snowballs on.
Firstly we made our snow balls by pressing the moon dough into the egg cup and then tapping them out slowly. I asked my son to give me a set number of snowballs to begin with. I then asked if we add one more how many will we have? So he made another snow ball and counted them out.
As you can see my son couldn’t resist splatting them.
When my son has rediscovered his impulse control we talked about one less. Ie we have four snowballs if we splat one how many will we have?
Such a fun hands on maths activity that we will definitely repeat.
