Hidden Numbers

I am always on the hunt for new, sensory and exciting ways to teach children their letter sounds, numbers, colours or shapes. This activity delivered on all three fronts. My son loved moving the sensory rice around the tray looking for the numbers which were hidden.

Set Up

This was a very quick activity to set up. I cut out a big circle from some baking paper and wrote some numbers on the paper. I then placed the baking paper in the tray, poured the rice from our Minibeast activity box over the paper, put out a paintbrush and we were ready. If you have our At the Seaside activity box you can use the paintbrush from that box.

I added the playdough from our Minibeast activity box to practice counting out each number.

You could also hide the Bug Hunt Sheet or the Minibeast Spinner at the bottom of the tray to look for Minibeasts.

As soon as my son saw this activity he was over and using the paintbrush to move the sensory rice around. He loved finding all the numbers and then telling me what he had found.

It wasn’t long before the paintbrush was abandoned and my son used his hands to move the sensory rice around.

This was a huge hit and we will be doing this activity again for teaching those tricky letter sounds.
