Bugs in Playdough

A wonderfully simple and soothing playdough activity to encourage your toddler or child’s creativity and use of interesting and unusual adjectives and adverbs.

Set Up

This activity started in the morning when we went on our walk and we collected any natural materials that could be turned into a bug; we found twigs, leaves, bark, flowers, petals, grass or pebbles and brought them home. In the afternoon I got out the yellow playdough, the black beans and wooden beads from our Minibeast activity box.

We reread the ‘Mad about Minibeasts’ by Giles Andreae and David Wojtowycz to remind ourselves of some of the key features of the different bugs. They we started creating. I made bugs with them and we discussed what each of our bugs needed - antennae, wings, legs, eyes, ears…

Remembering all the wonderful new words we learnt in our Can You Move Like a Minibeast game we talked about how our bugs would move. Our bugs were fluttering, hovering and slithering.
