Snow at Night
Whether you have had snow or not this winter this snowy art activity is great fun and simple to try at home with toddlers and older children alike. It is one of the activities from our “Snowy Day Activity Box” and is inspired by the wonderful story “The Snowy Day” by Ezra Jack Keats.
Set Up
For the first part of this art activity I used the black 2D shapes, glue pot, lolly stick and blue card all from our January Activity Box. Using the 2D shapes the girls created their own city/townscape silhouette. As they chose shapes we discussed the shapes and their properties and what they might look like within their city. It was a great opportunity to model the correct maths terminology for not only the names of the shapes but also the properties: sides and corners.
We then left the pictures to dry overnight before adding our snow! The girls were reluctant to wait and were desperate to get painting. For this part we took the powder paint from our activity box and mixed it with a little water. The we used the cotton bids and cotton wool from the activity box to add the snow. They both enjoyed dotting the snow falling over their landscape.
Then we scrunched the cotton wool and dipped it in the paint. We created fluffy white snow that covered the ground like a blanket. The girls were both loved their finished art work and we are now very much wishing for some real snow to arrive outside! This was a great activity to explore not only the wonders of snow but also 2d shapes!
