Coloured Sand Art

This is a really lovely and easy coloured sand art activity to do at home with a baby, toddler or older child. The art produced looks very effective. It can be a bit messy but this is easily resolved with a hoover.

Set Up

All you need for this coloured sand art activity is PVA glue, coloured sand and a piece of white paper. I used a roasting tin so that the sand would stay in the tin. However my toddler had other ideas…

This coloured sand art activity would also work well if you used black paper. Coloured sand is a great sensory resource for all ages because the colours are really vibrant and is visually very appealing when it is poured.

When I did this activity, my son was still relatively little so I put the PVA glue onto the paper him. If your child is older this is something they would be able to do themselves using a paint brush.

My toddler needed very little/no encouragement to pour the sand onto the paper. It was a wonderful sensory sight to watch the sand be poured from the jug onto the paper and then onto the black table.

As you can see the coloured sand art activity become a little messy but my toddler then used the coloured sand he had poured onto the table, to sprinkle on the piece of paper. It looked really effective. To keep the art work safe, I laminated the work once it was dry.
