Habitats

This is a great activity as not only is it fun and appeals to those who enjoy small world play but it is also great for expanding science knowledge and also for practicing the maths skills of sorting into two categories!

Set Up

Using the tissue paper, blue card, autumn leaves and white play dough I created two very simple habitats. Then I added the animals from our Polar Bear activity box and it was ready to go.

The girls were tasked with deciding in which habitat each animal belonged. The arctic or the forest. Both knew this pretty easily but then we started the discussion of why and how we could tell that a polar bear was “designed” for the arctic. This then led onto a bigger discussion of adaptation in animals in general and conversation turned to other animals that we knew. We added slips of paper with other animals that we thought would live in the forest and arctic. It was such a great discussion and I could see them both really having to consider their suggestions and reasons behind them.

After we had finished our discussions I went to start cooking dinner and the girls began to play with their habitats. They have both taken to their animals especially their polar bears and it was a joy to see them looking after their polar bears, feeding him, and trying to decorate him with the leaves!
