An Icy Rescue
This simple and fun science experiment not only teaches children about the changes that occur when water freezes and unfreezes but it is also a fabulous work out for little hands.
set up
For this activity I used the pipette from our January Snowy Day activity box, some freeze safe cupcake holders, plastic toys and some water.
Our first very important job was to place different objects inside the freeze safe containers, pour water on top, place them in the freezer and wait. The waiting was difficult for an excited preschooler.
After a few hours it was time to rescue the sea creatures. We tried to rescue them by melting the ice with cold and then warm water to see which one was quicker. My son quickly ascertained that warm water was more effective.
We have repeated this activity a number of times with dinosaurs, farm yard animals and natural resources, like pine cones.
