Threading Christmas Card

This Christmas card craft is perfect for older toddlers, preschoolers and kids. Threading is an excellent activity to develop hand eye coordination and fine motor skills. This activity takes very little time to prep and creates very little mess, so is perfect to try at home when you don’t want the house to look like a disaster zone afterwards.

Set Up

For this you will need white card (either white card cut in half and folded or blank white cards), string or ribbon and then something to go on the top of the tree. I used these wooden stars but you could just as easily use a big sequin or sticker. I made holes in the card using the tip of a small knife but a metal skewer with the card placed on a chopping board would be best. I put a hole in the top of the tree thinking that way we could criss cross the string at the top but it didn’t work. So I would suggest not putting a hole at the top of the tree.

I also wrapped a very small piece of sellotape round the end of the string to stop it fraying and tied a big knot at the other end.

I was pleasantly surprised how excited M was to do the threading. It isn’t something that we have done much of but she was very keen to get going. After some initial confusion as to which hole to thread through next she soon got the hang of it and was finished long before I thought she would be. She was keen to get onto the next one.

This was such a brilliant calming activity to do at home after a long day at school. I was really impressed with how these cards look. I am looking forward to making more of these over the coming weeks, although I will be using a slightly better method to make the holes in the card! All in all a great Christmas Card craft to try with older toddlers, preschoolers and kids too. Get some Christmas music on and get threading!
